Can dogs have palm oil

Can dogs have palm oil? How does an oil that causes heart and liver damage affect pets?

My parents have adopted a beagle puppy. They have given me the responsibility of finding a dog home. Now, it appears that the dog that they chose will be one that may need a little oil. The owner has had his dog at that location for the last 6 years. When I called to inquire as to the dog's health, I was informed that the dog is not at risk for any heart or liver damage. I do not have the energy to deal with this matter, so I have asked a veterinarian to investigate for me and provide his opinion. I believe that I will still have to handle the dog if there is a need to go to that location to obtain the results of the investigation, but I would be glad to give the dog to my parents if they would like it.

The owner states that the dog lives in the kitchen and takes his meals there. The owner makes sure that the dogs' food is the correct weight and mixes the oil with the food. This oil is called palm oil.

I have only been doing this for a couple of years. I have never used it on any of my dogs, but the owner stated that the vet had given him the recommendation to use it on his dog.

Has anyone ever used palm oil on their dog? How would the owner be able to tell if the oil had the potential to have a negative effect on the dog's health? How could the oil be harmful to the dog's health?

I am afraid that the oil would be detrimental to the dog's health.

Please post a reply. Thank you.

I use it on my dogs all the time. It is much healthier than regular dog food.

The only thing I use is a little honey. I mix it in with the oil and they love it!

My vet says it is ok. The first time I used it he asked if I was sure. I told him I was. He gave me permission. The second time I used it he said, “oh no!”. He said I couldn’t use it again until I talked to him. He said that palm oil should be used only in the food not in the supplements. He told me if I was going to use it on my dog I should only use it in his food.

I have always used Palm Kernel Oil with my dogs…it’s been my staple all this time..and I really don’t know if that’s okay.

You should be able to use this information to find out if your particular breed is protected and if you need to be using one of the listed commercial products for your breed.

Your veterinarian can tell you if the pet you have is a pit bull mix or not. If it is a pit mix, he may recommend that you use the products on the list that are listed for pit mixes.

If the pet you have is NOT a pit mix, you should know which commercial product will work best for him.

You may use your veterinarian's recommendation in making a decision to use a particular commercial product, but if you get a different answer from someone at Paws for Success, you should contact us for more information.

Thank you.

Hi, Thanks for your help. Do you know what is a good commercial product for a boxer mix? I would like to use the shampoo with my dog.

Paws for Success responds:

Katey,

Thank you for contacting Paws for Success with this question. If the pup you have is NOT a pit mix, we would recommend using the shampoo that's been recommended for canines or felines. You should be able to find the best commercial product for your pet by asking your veterinarian for information.

I'm getting a new puppy and I'd like to start using a shampoo that is specifically for pets. Will this one help my puppy?

Answer by AmyL on 8/27/2008:

Hi,

If your dog has hair that is soft like puppy's hair, we would recommend that you choose the shampoo that is specifically for pets. If it's not so soft, your dog may react to the shampoo or you may notice that it has to be cleaned out from the dog's coat.

Sincerely,

Amy
