Question

How long does a 30lb bag of dog food last for? And when is it time to buy more?

A reader asked about how long a 30-pound bag of dog food lasts.

“I have two dogs. One is a 5 year old pit bull mix and the other is a year old golden retriever. My pit bull mix has been on this food for awhile now and recently changed to the same food as my golden.

“They always get a fresh bag of the same food when they are full and the bag lasts about 10 days. The same thing happened when they were puppies. Do you have any tips on getting them on a proper diet?

“I’ve also heard that dogs on this food need to go to the vet every six months for a check up. Can they get sick on this food?

“Also, my pit bull mix is going on five years now. He is a wonderful dog and never gets sick. I’m just wondering when is it time to switch to a different food.

“Also, when can I add more exercise to his routine? He is a large dog and is about 30lbs.

“Thanks for all the help!

“Sarah,”

We understand that food is an important part of your dog’s diet. When your dog is hungry or tired, the effects of overindulging in food will become apparent. Unfortunately, the same goes for overindulging in exercise.

Exercise is an important part of your dog’s diet. In fact, the National Animal Control Foundation indicates that exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your dog.

“Dogs who are regularly engaged in vigorous activity get great physical benefits, including a healthier coat, greater stamina, fewer hot spots and lower levels of cancer-causing cells and toxins in the body. As your dog gets older, regular exercise can reduce their risk of health problems like arthritis, obesity and heart disease.”

At the same time, you can increase the benefit of the food you are feeding by adding nutritional supplements.

We recommend starting by supplementing the dog’s diet with a quality omega-3 supplement. Omega-3 can help support the immune system and help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress.

If you want to take your dog to the park, you can start with a shorter walk (one mile per hour), then slowly work up to 3 miles per hour. At first, walking and running is all you will be able to do, but as you get stronger you can add agility classes and even dog sports.

Good luck and stay tuned!
